Introduction
As this entire book contains nothing but me talking about myself – oh, and about my writing, fiction in general, the publishing industry, and anything that happens to catch my attention – look, a falling star! – I’ll keep this introduction brief.
The Kiss Across Time Notebook emerged out of the development and publication of the Kiss Across Time series special tenth anniversary limited editions, released in mid-2023.
Each book in the series included an essay at the front by moi. I had a blast writing the first few. But in late 2022, I learned that the debilitating pain that had reduced me to walking with a cane and, finally, to using a wheelchair, was the result of cancer. I had emergency surgery on my spine and neck as the cancer had eaten away my C1 vertebrae, which was pressing in on my spinal cord.
Straight after the surgery I began chemotherapy, contracted COVID from my stay in hospital, battled a bone infection from the surgery and had a second surgery to clean out the scar, six weeks of intravenous antibiotics, and more chemo.
And I kept writing the essays for the limited editions.
It’s possible that the essays turned a little darker as I progressed through it all. They certainly grew more reflective.
Now I’m revising them for inclusion in this single volume notebook, for readers who missed the limited-edition release. I’m also including bonus essays and easter eggs. And this time, I won’t be pulling punches.
I’ve grown a little too aware of wasting time.
